I use electrophysiological techniques to investigate the emergence of song selectivity in the developing songbird brain. Special attention is directed to auditory neurons that become rapidly tuned to the tutor song as these could play a role in song memorization. How social factors contribute to the song learning process is another area of interest.

I am interested in how dynamic patterns of information in the environment give rise to higher-level brain processes and natural behaviors. My research examines the neurophysiological and behavioral mechanisms that underlie the perception, learning, memory and cognition of acoustic communication signals, focusing primarily on the songbird auditory system. My work draws as needed on a range of integrative biological and psychological techniques, including electrophysiology, immunochemistry, neuro-anatomy, animal learning, and behavior. Many experiments integrate electrophysiology and behavior in awake, behaving animals.

I am a senior graduate student in the Margoliash lab and the Committee on
Neurobiology. My work centers around the neuromodulatory control of
activity in the song system. Specifically, I study the role of the
cholinergic basal forebrain in regulating the expression of song-selective
auditory responses. To approach this problem, I use in vivo single unit
extracellular physiology in conjuction with microinjection and
microstimulation, as well as in vitro while cell recording and behavioral
techniques.

I am interested in the role of the anterior forebrain pathway (AFP) in adult song plasticity. To address this, I've been investigating the role of neuromodulation on the auditory response properties of nuclei in the AFP.

Lab Manager
Since I started working for Dr. Margoliash, in 1999, my focus has been
husbandry, histological techniques, instruction, and helping to run the lab.
